On October 6, students of the bachelor’s degree programmes “Philology (Germanic languages and literatures (including translation), English major, German minor)” and “Secondary Education (English Language and Foreign Literature)”, as well as the master’s programme Secondary education (Language and literature (English))took part in an open online lecture byScott Thornbury – a world-renowned author of books on English language teaching methodology, educator, methodologist, and teacher trainer with over 30 years of experience.

The event, supported by TESOL-UkraineandSumy State Pedagogical University named after A. S. Makarenko, brought together teachers and students from across Ukraine. The lecture, titled “Dogme ELT / Teaching Unplugged”, was dedicated to a modern communicative approach to English language teaching that emphasizes real interaction and the use of authentic materials instead of traditional textbooks.

During the session, Scott Thornbury shared the philosophy behind the Dogme ELT approach, his personal teaching experience, and practical recommendations for English language teachers. Students of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University noted that participation in the lecture became a valuable source of inspiration and motivation for their further professional growth.

The event became an important milestone in the professional development of future philologists and English teachers, demonstrating the openness of Ukrainian philological education to contemporary international trends in the field of ELT.
