A practice-oriented meeting was held recently for higher education students majoring in Journalism, which opened up new facets of their future profession. The guest of the event was an experienced media professional, editor of the 1st category of the MTM TV channel, and a postgraduate student of Zaporizhia National University, Mariana Sarapii.

One of the key aspects of the meeting was a professional analysis of the educational program “Journalism”. As a representative of stakeholders and practitioners with many years of experience, Mariana Sarapii joined the discussion of the fullness of the educational disciplines.

The speaker emphasized the importance of a balance between the theoretical base and applied skills. In particular, attention was focused on the versatility of a media professional: the ability to work simultaneously with text, footage, and sound. Mariana emphasized that among the important competencies is digital literacy, which allows you to adapt content for different platforms and social networks. When training future journalists, it is important to focus on ethical standards, in particular, work in martial law and compliance with journalistic deontology.

The second part of the meeting was held in the format of live communication. Students had the opportunity to ask questions that concern future reporters and editors the most. The applicants’ questions concerned the specifics of working on television, psychological stability, finding topics for materials, correcting errors, and starting a career.

Mariana Sarapiy shared her own professional cases, talking about the specifics of preparing TV programs on the MTM TV channel, the peculiarities of editorial policy, and the importance of continuous self-education.

Such events are extremely valuable, because they allow students to synchronize the knowledge gained at the university with the real demands of the modern media market. “Thanks to this meeting, I learned more about the practical skills of a journalist on air and content creation. In addition, Ms. Maryana told me about the MTM TV channel, which I would like to wish good luck in producing its own programs. It’s really cool when an experienced journalist gives advice on getting a quality education. I look forward to future meetings with Ms. Maryana. The recommendation on constant improvement and study of the Ukrainian language turned out to be valuable and relevant,” said Danylo, a 2nd year student of the OPP “Journalism”.

We sincerely thank Maryana Sarapiy for the meaningful conversation and valuable advice for future colleagues!
