Who said that science and dance have nothing in common? During the Science Festival of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University, the Department of Choreography and Fitness shifted the focus of research for one day into the world of twirl and dance workshop practices. On May 15, 2026, Yuliia Skyba, Associate Professor of the Department, contemporary dance teacher, and performer, conducted the workshop “Movement Laboratory: From Anatomy to Performance” for full-time choreography students.
The creative laboratory became a unique experimental space combining anatomical body awareness with the art of performative improvisation. The main goal of the workshop was to help students gain a deeper understanding of the connection between inner state, emotion, imagination, and movement in space.
During the practical session, participants completed various tasks aimed at exploring their own physicality, interacting with space, and developing plastic expressiveness and spontaneity of movement. Particular attention was paid to improvisation as a tool for creative self-expression and for discovering an individual stage language.
While working on the creative tasks, the students demonstrated openness to experimentation, creativity, and the ability to work with the emotional content of movement. The atmosphere of trust and creative exploration encouraged deep immersion in the process and broadened the understanding of movement as a form of communication and artistic expression.
The workshop “Movement Laboratory: From Anatomy to Performance” became an important part of the scientific and creative activities of the Department of Choreography and Fitness of the Faculty of Physical Culture, Sports and Human Health, as it combined practical experience, contemporary approaches to body work, and the development of professional competencies of future specialists in the field of performative arts.
At the end of the workshop, participants once again realized that dance, like science, begins with exploration: of oneself, movement, space, and the possibilities of creative self-expression. Such artistic and scientific initiatives contribute to the formation of a modern professional capable of thinking creatively, feeling deeply, and boldly experimenting in professional practice.
