Within the framework of the National Barrier-Free Week (May 25–31, 2026), Berdyansk State Pedagogical University held a curatorial hour titled “Barrier-Free Stories that Inspire,” featuring video materials prepared by the NGO “Barrier-Free.”
Students from all faculties of the university took part in the viewing, including: the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, Computer and Technological Education; the Faculty of Philology and Social Communications; the Faculty of Physical Culture, Sports and Human Health; the Faculty of Humanities and Economics; the Faculty of Psychology, Pedagogy, Arts and Education; and the Faculty of Preschool, Special and Social Education.
The aim of the event was to develop students’ understanding of the values of accessibility, inclusion, and equal opportunities through real-life stories and initiatives that contribute to creating an open, accessible, and comfortable environment for everyone.
After watching the videos, a reflective survey was conducted.
The analysis of the survey results showed that most participants already had a basic or partial understanding of the concept of “barrier-free accessibility.” At the same time, the video materials significantly expanded their understanding and contributed to a deeper awareness of real-life barriers faced by individuals in society.
The most emotionally impactful videos were those about the “Third After Midnight” Museum in the Dark, the inclusive social enterprise “Good Bread from Good People,” as well as initiatives related to urban accessibility and independent living support for persons with disabilities.
The respondents’ answers highlighted key themes such as accessibility of the environment, inclusive employment, social responsibility, humanity, and equal opportunities. Most students noted that the videos influenced their attitudes toward accessibility issues and contributed to the development of empathy.
A considerable number of respondents assessed their educational institutions and cities as partially barrier-free, indicating awareness of existing challenges and the need for further improvements.
Students expressed readiness to participate in initiatives aimed at promoting accessibility, which demonstrates a growing motivation for social engagement.
The curatorial hour “Barrier-Free Stories that Inspire” proved to be an effective educational and воспитательный activity aimed at fostering an inclusive culture, increasing awareness, and developing responsible attitudes toward building a barrier-free society.
The event also contributed to strengthening interfaculty cooperation and increasing attention within the student community to issues of accessibility, equality, and social inclusion.
