There are many ways to help others. Sometimes it is enough to listen, sometimes to organize a charitable initiative, and sometimes simply to know how to act in a crisis. Yet every act of support begins with knowledge, responsibility, and a willingness to stand by those in need. Throughout the academic year, these values formed the foundation of the Volunteer School, which has become a valued tradition of the Department of Social Work and Inclusive Education.
Over the course of the year, students from various academic programmes explored the world of contemporary volunteering. Each session focused on a specific topic, combining theoretical knowledge with practical exercises, discussions, and real-life examples. Participants gained an understanding of the legal framework of volunteer work, the principles of effective communication, teamwork, fundraising, social initiative development, leadership, and safe volunteering practices. Particular attention was also devoted to emotional resilience, the prevention of volunteer burnout, and maintaining personal psychological well-being.
Especially valuable were the meetings with invited practitioners who shared their professional experience, practical advice, and inspiring personal stories. These conversations clearly demonstrated that volunteering is not only about good intentions but also about competence, responsibility, and continuous personal and professional development.
However, the Volunteer School is much more than a series of educational sessions. It is a space built on trust, mutual support, and shared values. Throughout the year, participants generated new ideas, engaged in meaningful discussions, and formed teams of like-minded individuals committed to addressing social challenges rather than remaining passive observers.
The conclusion of the academic year provided an excellent opportunity to reflect on the journey that had been completed. Participants shared their impressions, discussed their personal achievements, and received certificates recognizing the successful completion of the Volunteer School programme.
The greatest confirmation of the programme’s value came from the participants themselves. “It was a pleasure to become part of the Volunteer School, meet such sincere and caring people, gain new knowledge, and find inspiration. Thank you for your expertise, support, and welcoming atmosphere,” shared one participant, Oksana. Other students also highlighted the warm environment, engaging sessions, and the opportunity to connect with like-minded peers. “Thank you for the meaningful communication and wonderful atmosphere,” noted Yelyzaveta. “This was not just a course but an experience that inspires you to care and to take action,” added Olha.
The most valuable outcome was not the certificates themselves but the knowledge acquired, the practical skills developed, and the realization that even a small act of kindness can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.
Although the academic year has come to an end, the desire to help never takes a vacation. New initiatives, new participants, and new opportunities to make a positive impact together lie ahead.
