Dear colleagues and esteemed students
The Department of Theory and Methods of Teaching Art Disciplines at Berdyansk State Pedagogical University presents a creative project dedicated to Borys Lyatoshynsky – the founder of the Ukrainian composer school.
Borys Lyatoshynsky (1895–1968) was the first Ukrainian composer of international acclaim, a conductor, educator, and the founder of the modern Ukrainian composer school, as well as one of the greatest innovators of the 20th century. He was the founder and the highest authority of domestic modernism, shaping the development of contemporary Ukrainian music.
Lyatoshynsky was the patriarch of the national composer school. He was a composer of European stature and the most skilled and influential pedagogue among his peers. He managed to pass on his knowledge to the next generation, mentoring students from the “Kyiv Avant-Garde” group. The Lyatoshynsky school emphasizes the development of individuality, respect for differing opinions, and freedom of artistic exploration.
Among his students were renowned Ukrainian composers: Valentyn Sylvestrov, Ihor Shamo, Lesia Dychko, Yuriy Shchurovskyi, Yevhen Stankovych, Mykola Poloz, Valeriy Polovyi, Heorhiy Miretskyi, Leonid Hrabovskyi, and Ivan Karabyts, who brought the Ukrainian composer school to the global stage.
Borys Lyatoshynsky was the founder of innovative symphonic genre canons in Ukrainian music. Thanks to him, we can speak of a European-level Ukrainian symphonic culture. The vast musical legacy of this outstanding composer constitutes the golden fund of Ukrainian music, and the name of Borys Lyatoshynsky increasingly attracts attention, representing the expressive originality of 20th-century Ukrainian music.
