Dissemination of information about the existing large-scale problem is one of the steps towards its solution.

On April 27, 2026, the article “Burnout and Institutional Support among Ukrainian Academic Staff during the War” was published online in the Higher Education Research & Development publication.

This was reported on her Facebook page by the Vice-Rector for Scientific Work of Berdiansk State Pedagogical University Yana Sychikova.

Among the authors:

  • researcher of Sumy State University Uliana Kolomiiets;
  • scientists of BSPU Natalia Tsybuliak, Hanna Mytsyk, Anastasiia Popova, Hanna Lopatina, Artem Polulyakhov and Yana Sychikova.

We are talking about a study of burnout factors in the academic environment, the basis of which is a survey of 429 academic staff of Ukrainian universities. The indicators report:

  • high levels of emotional exhaustion (71.8%);
  • feelings of alienation from work (59.4%);
  • low feelings of professional effectiveness (59.9%).

However, this article focuses on the role of universities and institutional support. Currently, higher education institutions have psychological support initiatives in the form of training and consultations, but the authors emphasize the importance of three factors in this process: trust, accessibility and institutional culture.

In her article, Yana Sychikova concludes: “if support is perceived as formal, disconnected from real needs or imposed from above, it not only does not help, but can also increase irritation and distrust.”

The article is available at: https://doi.org/10.1080/07294360.2026.2657950  .

Higher Education Research & Development – a journal of the Taylor and Francis Online portal; an international peer-reviewed journal that “publishes scientific articles that make a significant and original contribution to the field of higher education.”
