On February 8, 2026, first- and second-year Bachelor’s degree students of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University, Kateryna Hrudiienko and Alina Shyp, took part in the Sretenia evening gathering dedicated to the national holiday of Presentation of the Lord. This is one of the most colorful winter holidays in the Ukrainian calendar cycle, symbolizing the meeting and symbolic confrontation of winter and spring, light and darkness, warmth and cold. In folk belief, this day marks nature’s first step toward renewal, and people eagerly await the coming of spring.
The purpose of the event was to revive and promote Ukrainian traditions, as well as to create an environment for young people to gain a deeper understanding of national culture. The organizers ensured that participants were not merely observers of the recreated rituals but became active contributors to them. The evening program was rich and diverse.
During the gathering, the students learned about traditional customs and rituals associated with Sretenia, discovering the symbolism and significance of the holiday in the lives of Ukrainians. Participants engaged in traditional games and amusements, performed Ukrainian folk songs, and took part in circle dances, recreating the atmosphere of old-time evening gatherings. The interactive elements of the event were especially engaging, allowing everyone to feel like a part of a great cultural heritage.
The atmosphere of the event was exceptionally warm, sincere, and authentic. The venue was filled with a festive spirit, cheerful voices, laughter, and music. All those present felt unity, mutual support, and shared joy in reviving Ukrainian traditions. Such meetings bring young people together, foster friendly connections, and create unforgettable memories.
The evening left pleasant impressions in the hearts of the participants and brought many positive emotions. For the students, it was not only an opportunity to spend meaningful leisure time but also a chance to better understand the importance of folk traditions in modern life. Events like this contribute to the development of national awareness, cultivate respect for history and culture, promote Ukrainian traditions among youth, and help preserve Ukraine’s intangible cultural heritage.
