From May 4 to 8, the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics, Computer and Technology Education hosted Physics Week – an event initiated by the Faculty Student Council with the support of the Department of Physics, Mathematics and Teaching Methods. Its central idea was to demonstrate that physics is not merely formulas, complex calculations and textbook pages, but above all a living science that reveals and explains the fascinating world around us.

The coordination of preparation, visual design and social media coverage was carried out by Daria Tonkykh, Head of the Interaction and Initiatives Sector of the PMCTE Faculty Student Council, second-year student of group 2MA, majoring in Secondary Education (Mathematics); the organisation of interactive online activities was handled by Victoria Panova, Acting Head of the PMCTE Faculty Student Council, first-year student of group 1DT, majoring in Vocational Education (Digital Technologies); academic support was provided by Oleksandr Shkola, Head of the Department of Physics, Mathematics and Teaching Methods.

The week opened with the online quiz «Physics Without Formulas: True or Myth?», in which participants – without any calculations or special preparation, relying solely on attentiveness and intuition – determined whether statements about physical facts and phenomena familiar from the school curriculum were true or false. This format set a light, engaging and thought-provoking tone for the entire week. The next activity was the online interactive «Physics in a Single Frame», in which participants were invited to identify a physical phenomenon from a given image or visual effect. This format generated considerable interest and convincingly demonstrated that fundamental science surrounds us in virtually every moment of daily life – even in those we tend to take for granted. A highlight of the week was the open lecture by Oleksandr Shkola, «Through the Pages of Physics History: How Humanity Came to Know the Universe» – a captivating account of how, through observation and experiment, humanity gradually uncovered the laws of nature, built a coherent picture of the Universe and approached its modern understanding. The lecture offered a fresh perspective on physics – not as a demanding academic subject, but as a grand historical journey of human thought, bold scientific ideas, research, debate and discovery. The closing event was the interactive Physics Marathon, prepared and hosted by the Head of the Department in the format of the intellectual game «Jeopardy». Participants answered engaging questions across five thematic categories: «Genius», «Theory», «Experiment», «History» and «Miscellaneous». The event gave students a wonderful opportunity not only to recall physical facts and test their knowledge, erudition and quick thinking, but also to experience science as something truly captivating, surprising and enjoyable.

Students from all degree programmes of the faculty took part in Physics Week, along with everyone with an interest in science, and the most active participants received certificates. Overall, the event once again confirmed: physics is a fundamental science of nature that shapes a scientific worldview and a way of thinking – it teaches us to observe, investigate, discover and better understand the world around us; a science that can be accessible, exciting and inspiring for everyone. The PMCTE Faculty Student Council sincerely thanks all participants for their enthusiasm and engagement, fellow student government members for their coordination and communications support, and the department’s academic staff for their support and meaningful contributions.

It is precisely this kind of collaboration that keeps science alive. More initiatives, new ideas and new reasons to fall in love with physics together lie ahead !
