Rules or Meaning? An Open Lecture on Teaching Grammar in Context

On March 6, 2025, the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at Berdyansk State Pedagogical University hosted an online open lecture titled «Teaching Grammar in Context: Prescriptive, Descriptive, and Pedagogic Grammars. The Differences Between Grammar in Writing and in Speaking».
The lecture was delivered by Victoria Smelianska, PhD, Associate Professor at the Department of Germanic Philology and Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages, Nizhyn Mykola Gogol State University.
The event brought together students from three degree programmes:
- Bachelor’s level — Secondary Education (English Language and Literature);
- Bachelor’s level — Philology (Germanic Languages and Literatures, including Translation; first language — English, second — German);
- Master’s level — Secondary Education (Language and Literature, English).
The lecture had a distinctly interactive character: students engaged actively in discussion, confidently defended their ideas and viewpoints, and demonstrated a high level of professional competence and critical thinking.
