A Student Journalist in the Spotlight: Experience That Begins Right Now

Just a few years ago, student journalism was mostly associated with academic or internship practice, university news, or first attempts at writing short articles. Today, the situation has changed dramatically. In the conditions of a full-scale war, young journalists are increasingly becoming not only observers of events but also active participants in the information front. Even a student without professional equipment, simply holding a phone, can be the first to document an important event, record a volunteer’s story, or talk about the life of a community and student life during wartime.

How Is Reality Changing the Path into Journalism?

Many people believe that successful work in media requires years of experience. However, modern realities prove otherwise: a student can become a successful journalist while still studying. Young people actively create their own media projects, run blogs, work in student publications, produce reports, and cover important events in their communities. Today, sincerity, efficiency, and the ability to communicate with audiences in a simple and understandable way are especially valuable.

At the same time, journalism during wartime requires great responsibility. Future journalists must verify information, follow ethical standards, and remember the importance of information security. Today, public trust and even people’s safety may depend on every word. That is why a modern journalist must be not only creative but also attentive, honest, and professional.

What Can Help a Student Journalist Develop Right Now?

• Do Not Be Afraid of Practice
  Real experience helps future journalists understand the specifics of the profession, learn how to work with information, and develop their own style. One of the best ways to grow is by participating in student media, university projects, youth online publications, or creating personal content.

• Create Your Own Media Platforms
  Running a blog, Telegram channel, TikTok account, or social media page can become valuable experience. It teaches students how to interact with audiences, respond quickly to news events, and create content in different formats. A modern journalist should be able not only to write texts but also to work with photos, videos, editing, and digital platforms.

• Focus on Continuous Self-Education
  Students should follow professional Ukrainian and international media, analyze how materials are presented, and pay attention to the work of journalists in wartime conditions. Participating in trainings, media festivals, workshops, and competitions is also useful because it provides new knowledge, professional contacts, and first experience in presenting one’s work publicly.

  Today, special attention should be paid to digital competencies. Working with AI tools, creating multimedia content, and using visual editors and video-editing platforms are becoming essential parts of the profession.
