On Journalists’ Day: The Value of the Profession and the People Who Lead the Way

Every year on June 6, Ukraine celebrates Journalists’ Day – a professional holiday honoring those who inform society about the most important events, help people find answers to pressing questions, and shape public opinion. In today’s world, the media play an exceptionally important role. The profession of journalism has become especially significant during wartime, when society needs truthful news, verified facts, and objective coverage of reality.

For most Journalism students, this day is not just another date on the calendar. It is also an opportunity to reflect on why they chose this profession and whether they made the right decision.

Journalism is often perceived as a profession filled with engaging stories, fascinating interviews, and constant involvement in major events. In reality, every publication requires tremendous effort: gathering information, fact-checking, communicating with sources and interviewees, and taking responsibility for every written word. It also demands psychological resilience. That is why journalism requires not only professional skills but also honesty, empathy, and a willingness to learn continuously.

For us, Journalism students, this holiday has a special meaning. We are only beginning our professional journey, mastering the craft, learning how to work with information, and finding our own voices in the media landscape. During internships, we gain experience in writing articles, working with sources, and creating quality content. Ahead of us lie our first reports, interviews, investigative stories, and many new challenges. Yet even now, we understand that journalism is, above all, a responsibility to people and to society.

On this day, on behalf of all Journalism students, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our lecturers, who generously share their knowledge and professional experience and help students master the intricacies of journalistic work. Thanks to your support, wise guidance, and dedication, a new generation of media professionals is being formed – one that is capable of working responsibly and professionally.
