Alla Melnychuk, a lecturer at the Department of Social Work and Inclusive Education of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University, took part in the international training “Mediating Conflicts in Groups”, held at the KURVE Wustrow training center (Germany).

The training program focused on developing practical mediation skills and covered key stages of conflict facilitation, including defining the mandate, identifying conflict issues, analyzing underlying causes, acknowledging the needs and “pain” of the parties, generating possible solutions, and agreeing on a joint action plan. Particular attention was given to group dynamics and creating a safe space for dialogue.

Participants from six countries took part in the training, providing opportunities for experience exchange and comparison of conflict resolution approaches across different cultural contexts. This intercultural format enabled a deeper understanding of mediation practices in various social and professional environments.

As part of the program, Alla Melnychuk presented the Ukrainian context, highlighting current challenges related to the war, the resilience of educational communities, and expressing gratitude to international partners for their support of Ukraine.

The training was facilitated by experienced mediators Marianne Koch and Silke Freitag, who have extensive expertise in conflict transformation.

Participation in the training was made possible through a scholarship provided by the NGO “Theatre for Change”.

The event contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular: SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities, SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.

The knowledge and skills acquired will be integrated into the educational process and practical training of future social work professionals, particularly in the context of conflict management and effective communication in today’s challenging environment.
