On February 11, 2026, the Department of Foreign Languages and Teaching Methodology at Berdyansk State Pedagogical University hosted the online workshop “Empowering Learners Through Media Literacy Cases.”

The event was conducted by Yuliia Khomiakova, a teacher of English of the highest qualification category at Municipal Institution “Kharkiv Academic Lyceum No. 45 of Kharkiv City Council,” a methodologist teacher, and the winner of the city competition “Teacher of the Year — 2026.” The workshop was open to all interested participants, including students of the Educational and Professional Program “Secondary Education (Music Art and English Language)” of the first (Bachelor’s) level of higher education, specialty A4.13 Secondary Education (subject specializations).

For future teachers of English and Music Art, this workshop became a valuable example of integrating media literacy into interdisciplinary connections. Students actively participated in discussions, asked questions about adapting cases for school lessons, and shared their own ideas on using media in distance and blended learning environments.

The workshop focused on practical aspects of developing students’ media literacy through the integration of media into English language lessons. Ms. Khomiakova shared her own cases developed within her teaching practice, including award-winning projects from All-Ukrainian media literacy competitions. Participants learned how to use media for critical content analysis, countering misinformation, developing critical thinking skills, and fostering students’ creative self-expression in the digital environment.

Such a format of guest lectures delivered by practitioners helps BSPU students combine theoretical knowledge with real pedagogical tools. Participants emphasized the practical orientation of the event, the relevance of the topic in today’s information space, and the inspiration they gained. Meetings of this kind contribute to the professional growth of future teachers, preparing them for the challenges of modern schools, where media literacy has become an integral part of education.
