On April 23, 2026, Karina Koval, Assistant Lecturer at the Department of Pedagogy, introduced students of the Faculty of Psychological and Pedagogical Education and Arts at Berdiansk State Pedagogical University to the OpenData VizLab project – a citizen science initiative that integrates research, analytics, and digital tools.

In today’s world, citizen science is gaining increasing importance, as it opens up opportunities for engaging a wide range of people in research activities. This approach not only contributes to the popularization of science but also enhances the quality of data analysis through the collective contribution of participants and the diversity of their experiences.

The aim of the OpenData VizLab project is to create an open library of data visualization examples that can be used in the educational process, social research, and community development. Within the initiative, participants can choose an open dataset or use their own observations to create a visualization (a chart, diagram, or map) using tools such as Python, R, Excel, or other accessible means.

During the meeting, students became familiar with the basic principles of working with open data, learned about the role of visualization in presenting research results, and received practical recommendations on finding data and developing their own projects. Particular attention was paid to the idea that even basic data analysis skills can serve as a foundation for meaningful and socially significant research.

The OpenData VizLab initiative opens up new opportunities for developing analytical thinking, digital literacy, and research skills among students, while also fostering their active involvement in shaping a modern scientific and educational environment.

We wish all project participants inspiration, creativity, and satisfaction in creating their own visualizations!
