On Monday, April 27, 2026, the 5th Seminar on National Consensus Building on Open Science was held online, on the Zoom platform.

The event was held within the framework of the Open4UA project consortium (Erasmus+ CBHE Strand 3), “which aims to promote the growth of Ukraine’s knowledge economy by reforming the higher education system”.

The seminar presented the results of piloting the toolkit for implementing open science.

The focus was on presenting and discussing the results of implementing these tools in three higher education institutions of Ukraine, challenges and opportunities for expansion.

In particular, the experience of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University was highlighted. The Vice-Rector for Research Yana Sychikova reported.

As the BSPU speaker emphasized: “Because we were relocated, we lost most of it – all, all of our infrastructure – repositories, everything. We needed an understanding of how to move forward … And then we looked towards open science … We adopted the “university without walls” model for ourselves and … began integrating open science into our research practices”.

Among the main steps and achievements of BSPU in this direction are:

  • public statements, signed agreements, supported initiatives (DORA, CoARA, CARE, joining the Stockholm Declaration on the Reform of Scientific Publishing, etc.);
  • membership in the editorial boards of open access journals indexed in Scopus / WoS;
  • participation in the TAIEX Expert Mission (91866) “National Open Science Plan of Ukraine”, presentation of BDPU publications at the Book Arsenal 2025, established cooperation, etc.;
  • development of digital tools and platforms (Zenodo, DSpace, CORE Dashboard and OpenAlex API, OJS platforms);
  • participation, organization, conducting training seminars and courses on aspects of open science;
  • development of GAIDeT taxonomy, AI-PMT taxonomy, citizen science project …

Yana Sychikova summarizes: science should be open as much as possible and closed as much as necessary.
